Today we talked a lot about qualitative and quantitative data and all of the different ways they are used to analyze society. We watched the rest of the video on the guy who was going around and interviewing people about their music and why they play it. He thought that it was a reason to get together and talk about politics but he found out that he was wrong and that they believe that talking about politics separates people and they want to stay close and have a nice time playing music together. This kind of data is qualitative because he is collecting informational d ata about their opinions, not something with a number such as how many people get together to play music. Qualitative data gets more descriptive data. You are getting to know your data set and the people or things that you are analyzing much better because you are getting actual information about the subject. If you collect quantitative data you are merely getting statistics on the thing that you are exa...

Society post 4

Today in class we discussed and shared the good the bad and the unexpected aspects of social media. Some of the good things were that we are able to stay in contact with family and friends who do not live near enough to go see on a regular basis. Using social media is much more efficient and creative than sending a letter or paying for a phone call like what used to have to be done. Now we can simply go on our devices and send a message to them and they will virtually instantly receive the message wherever they are in the world. Another was that we can now share anything with someone or anyone who is “following” us immediately instead of saving whatever it is until we see them next and trying to remember to even do it. If we go on a vacation and take pictures of scenery or of ourselves and the people we are with we can, instead of showing each person individually each time we see them, simply just post it and when they decide to go on their phone they can look at it and...

Topics of Sociology post 2

Today in Class we learned how sociology isn’t a physical thing. You can’t go get some sociology at the store or look at it in a museum. Sociology is something you have to notice and be aware of which is usually because of being taught about it at some point in your life or another. A society can be something huge or something much less thought about. Society can be the whole of the United States, Eau Claire Wisconsin, the people in my school, or even my best friend and I. Many people overlook this and therefore have a very closed view of society. Small parts of society are still a part; You’re just a few bricks of a very big wall. Many people are very opinionated, or even too opinionated, which means, in some cases, they are closing themselves off from many perspectives of sociology. People like to stay in their comfort zones which is human nature, but one of the perspectives of sociology is being able to see the strange from the familiar, and sometimes that requires put...

Broad Sociology Post 1

In class we discussed how sociology is apart of most everything we do . Sociology is in our day to day lives everywhere. When we interact with people, when we go to work or school, and when we make any decisions that affect other people or things, that is sociology. Ways I notice sociology in my life is when I’m at my work and I have to interact with customers and the way I act can affect their whole day which then affects how they act to other people. If I’m nice and happy to people then they are more likely to pass that along to other people which would be me affecting society in a positive way. If I were to unhappy and not give the customers attention then they’re less likely to come back because they had a bad experience and that not only affects their day but it affects our company and sales which is on a much larger scale of sociology. School is another way I interact with sociology is during school. In school I talk to classmates, teachers, and other people that I s...
