Society post 4

Today in class we discussed and shared the good the bad and the unexpected aspects of social
media. Some of the good things were that we are able to stay in contact with family and friends who do
not live near enough to go see on a regular basis. Using social media is much more efficient and
creative than sending a letter or paying for a phone call like what used to have to be done. Now we can
simply go on our devices and send a message to them and they will virtually instantly receive the
message wherever they are in the world. Another was that we can now share anything with someone
or anyone who is “following” us immediately instead of saving whatever it is until we see them next and
trying to remember to even do it. If we go on a vacation and take pictures of scenery or of ourselves
and the people we are with we can, instead of showing each person individually each time we see
them, simply just post it and when they decide to go on their phone they can look at it and see it which
is much more efficient than the other option. One of the bad things we discussed was bullying.
Cyberbullying has become a large problem across social media. Not only has social media made it
simple for us to reach family when they aren't around but it has made it easier for bullies to attack
victims when they aren't within earshot also. One of the unexpected functions of social media is
directly tied to this, and that is mental health issues. Problems with depression, anxiety, eating
disorders, and other mental health issues are higher than they ever have been and that is most likely
tied directly to social media and cyberbullying.
This Video broke down some good noteworthy points about the ways social media is literally
changing our brains. The first being that five to ten percent of users are unable to manage their time online. The second
was about multi-tasking. Apparently, people think that using our phones makes us more capable of
multi-tasking but it actually makes us worse. The third point was that in one study eighty-nine
percent of test subjects felt their phone go off when it didn’t at least once in a two-week span. This is
called Phantom Vibration Syndrom.

A: You
1. One thing that I can do to benefit myself and society is just being as positive as I can be.
2. Something I could do to negatively affect society would be shutting myself out from it society
altogether.
B: Society
1.One thing society could do to affect me in a positive way would be having less traffic on the roads.
This would make me a much happier person.
2. One thing society does to affect me in a negative way is giving making me busy all the time and
having very little free time.
