Correlations

Today we talked a lot about qualitative and quantitative data and all of the different ways they are used
to analyze society. We watched the rest of the video on the guy who was going around and interviewing
people about their music and why they play it. He thought that it was a reason to get together and talk
about politics but he found out that he was wrong and that they believe that talking about politics
separates people and they want to stay close and have a nice time playing music together. This kind of
data is qualitative because he is collecting informational data about their opinions, not something
with a number such as how many people get together to play music. Qualitative data gets more
descriptive data. You are getting to know your data set and the people or things that you are analyzing
much better because you are getting actual information about the subject. If you collect quantitative
data you are merely getting statistics on the thing that you are examining. You collect things in
reference to numbers or amounts. If you are analyzing people who go to the gym, a qualitative way of
collecting that data set would be something like what is the reason the people are going to the gym or
what their end goal of being there is. A quantitative approach to an analysis like this would be how
many times a week the people go to the gym or what times they go into the gym. With qualitative you
get information that you can delve deeper into whereas quantitative you just get a data set. Both types
of data analysis are very important to research and should be utilized in almost all types of research.
This video does a great job of breaking down the differences between qualitative and quantitative data.
It says, “Quantitative research is objective, concrete, and measured; while qualitative research is
subjective, interpretive, and descriptive. It says “not all research falls into one category or another,
your study might require a mixture of both.”
You: 1. One thing that I can do to benefit myself and society is driving around less so there are fewer
fuel emissions.
2. Something I could do to negatively affect society would be keep driving but that also means
spending more money on gas which helps the economy.
Society:
1. One thing society could do to affect me in a positive way would be lowering the gas prices so I don’t
spend so much at one time.
2. One thing society does to affect me in a negative way is the gender stereotypes for males.

Today in Class we learned how sociology isn’t a physical thing. You can’t go get some sociology at the store or look at it in a museum. Society post 4

Today in class we discussed and shared the good the bad and the unexpected aspects of social media. Some of the good things were that we are able to stay in contact with family and friends who do not live near enough to go see on a regular basis. Using social media is much more efficient and creative than sending a letter or paying for a phone call like what used to have to be done. Now we can simply go on our devices and send a message to them and they will virtually instantly receive the message wherever they are in the world. Another was that we can now share anything with someone or anyone who is “following” us immediately instead of saving whatever it is until we see them next and trying to remember to even do it.
